What this site is all about
Essentially, this page is for my documentation of my progress in relearning C++ and programming in general. I've wanted to be a game programmer for years, and in 1997 and 1998 I was at my peak. My brother, myself, and my best friend Kevin Byrd were going to work on a game together, but it just never quite got off the ground. I fell out of touch with everything, blah blah blah, you name it, it was a hassle. I think one of the most daunting problems was the fact that although I (and my brother) were very good at Pascal and C++, neither of us had experience working with Visual C++ or Windows programming.
I plan to put that to the past now. I have dedicated myself to learning C++, Windows programming, and creating a small game that will get me some (albeit minor) experience in game programming. And you, good friend and reader, have stumbled onto my journal.
Don't be surprised if I express a few personal ideas in here as well. Make no mistake about it, this is my soapbox and I will use it liberally. Subjects may not even be related to games and programming every time as well. I may very well go off on a rant about the day's traffic (I-75 is hell). But I'll try to remain on topic.
So there you have it. As far as the immediate plans, I'm waiting to receive my copy of Visual C++ 6.0. As soon as that is had, I'll rush out to spend the $50 (ugh) on a book that will teach me all about this 'brave new world'. And if I can't borrow them from my brother, I'll be buying some books on linear algebra, geometry and a bit o' trigonometry. I'm pretty excited about this sudden desire to self educate, and I hope it doesn't fizzle out for at least two more days. (That's a joke; it should be at least two weeks before I get bored.)
Welcome to the QDP!
